Ideally located 15 minutes North of Kyoto station, a short stroll from Nishi Honganji, one of Kyoto’s world heritage sites and a 5-minute walk from Gojo station, our house combines traditional architecture and modern comfort during all seasons of the year.

HANARé Kamisuzuyacho is a 250 m2 mansion built in the early Meiji era, complemented by a beautiful 150-year old garden and registered as an important historical architectural asset by the city of Kyoto City. It has managed to resist the passage of time but has been extensively remodeled to improve its comfort and safety. A team of award-winning hotel architects gutted then reinforced the structure and corrected the tilts and shifts. The roof also had to be made lighter, insulation material and anti-seismic features were included. When the building was finally deemed sound again, all the necessary high-level amenities a modern and luxurious lifestyle demands were added. 

The result is a harmonious combination of traditional Japanese Sukiya architecture, subtle modern elegance and complete comfort at all seasons of the year.

The ground floor offers a luminous, spacious open-space from every part of which you can enjoy our garden. The modern counter kitchen area and dining-sitting space face each other while the tatami room with its own tsubo-niwa (private pocket garden) completes the layout.

The semi-detached former tea pavilion has been converted into a sleeping area. The bathroom is on the lower level and the bedroom on the higher one. 

For bedding, the tatami room next to the sitting area provides traditional Japanese futons while the converted tea-room has a western-style double bed.

The 56 square meters studio area, on the second floor, enjoys its own entrance, kitchen area, western bed, and bathroom and can operate as an independent unit.
